A trader in Lagos orders $5,000 of electronics from Guangzhou. The supplier quote looks clean. Then customs duty, VAT, the CISS levy and port clearing fees land on top, and the real cost is 40% higher than expected.

That gap shows up everywhere, from Tema to Mombasa to Durban. The difference between what you agreed to pay a supplier and what actually clears customs is where import businesses lose money, often before the first sale.

These import export tools for Africa exist to close that gap. Calculate your landed cost, check AfCFTA tariff rates, price freight, and compare a supplier payment method before you commit any money.

FAQ

What is the difference between import duty and landed cost?

Import duty is one line item, a percentage of your goods’ value charged by customs. Landed cost is the total: duty, VAT and other levies, freight, insurance, and clearing fees, all added to your supplier price. Landed cost is the number that actually determines whether an order is profitable.

Does AfCFTA reduce import duty on goods from outside Africa?

No. AfCFTA preferential tariffs only apply to goods originating in another African Union member state, and only if you can prove origin. Goods sourced from China, Europe or elsewhere outside Africa are still charged under each country’s standard customs tariff.

Which African country has the lowest import duty?

It depends entirely on the product category and HS code, not the country as a whole. A country can have a low duty band for one product and a high one for another. Run the specific calculator for your destination country and product type rather than assuming a country is generally cheap or expensive to import into.

How accurate are these calculators?

Each calculator is built around published customs, VAT and levy rates for that country and updated as regulations change. They give you a reliable estimate to plan against, not a final customs assessment. Confirm final figures with a licensed clearing agent or the relevant customs authority before you commit to a shipment.

Rates verified against Nigeria Customs Service, Kenya Revenue Authority, Ghana Revenue Authority, Uganda Revenue Authority, Tanzania Revenue Authority, South African Revenue Service, and the AfCFTA Secretariat, last checked August 2026. Rates and regulations change. Always confirm final figures with a licensed customs agent before committing to a shipment.
