The Story Behind MetricSuite.tools

Most people land on this page because they want to know more about MetricSuite.tools before they trust the numbers on the rest of the site. Fair enough. Here is my story.

My name is Julius. My middle name is Nyerere, after Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania. It is not a name I chose, but it is one I have grown into. It reminds me that my responsibility runs deeper than my passport.

I am Jamaican-Canadian. I do business in Kenya and Tanzania. For years I ran into the same wall over and over: there was no free tool built specifically for African markets that could tell me what a shipment would actually cost to land, what a crop would actually return, or what a mobile money transfer would actually take out of my pocket before I sent it.

Every calculator I found online was built for someone in London or Toronto, pricing in dollars and pounds. Not someone pricing in Kenyan shillings, Nigerian naira, or Tanzanian shillings. Not someone dealing with M-Pesa fees, AfCFTA tariffs, or customs duty that changes by product and by port.

Why I Built MetricSuite.tools

So I built my own.

MetricSuite.tools started as a personal set of spreadsheets and turned into a full platform: free import duty calculators, an AfCFTA tariff lookup, a crop profit calculator for diaspora farmers managing land from abroad, mobile money fee comparisons, and tools built country by country, not continent by continent. South Africa’s VAT rules are not Kenya’s. Uganda’s environmental levy on used clothing is not Tanzania’s freight formula. Details like that matter when it is your money on the line.

The Pan-African Connection

I also run Crdea.com, a platform built around repatriation and diaspora advocacy. Crdea and MetricSuite come from the same place. I believe in the pan-African project in the fullest sense: not just the 54 countries on the continent, but the diaspora across the Caribbean and the Americas that never stopped being African, even after the ships crossed.

That is why MetricSuite now runs a full CARICOM suite alongside the Africa suite. I think of the Caribbean as Africa’s sixth region, and I built the tools to match that belief: import duty calculators for Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, and Barbados, a CSME tariff lookup, and a remittance comparator built for a region where sending money home is a daily reality, not an afterthought.

When a duty rate changes in Kenya or a new levy passes in Uganda, I am the one updating it, usually within days of the law passing.
