Farm & Livestock Profitability Tools for Africa

A diaspora investor in London sends money home every planting season to fund a relative’s maize farm in Nigeria. She’s never been able to tell whether the farm actually turns a profit, or whether the money simply covers costs each year with nothing left over.

This is common wherever farming decisions get made from a distance, or even up close. Input costs, yield and market price all move independently, and without running the numbers, it’s easy to mistake a break-even year for a good one.

These farm profitability calculator tools for Africa work out real profit margin, ROI and breakeven yield for specific crops and livestock, by country, so the decision to plant, expand or invest is based on numbers instead of hope.

FAQ

How do I know if a crop is profitable before I plant it?

Compare expected input cost per hectare against expected yield and current market price for that crop, in that country. If the gap between cost and revenue is thin or negative before you’ve even accounted for weather risk or price swings, that’s the signal to reconsider before you commit money, not after harvest.

What’s the difference between yield and profit in farming?

Yield measures how much you produced. Profit measures what’s left after every input cost, labour, seed, fertiliser, land, is subtracted from what that yield actually sold for. A high-yield season on a crop with thin margins can still lose money.

Can I use this to compare farming opportunities across different countries?

Yes. Input costs, labour rates and market prices differ significantly by country for the same crop, sometimes by more than 100% per hectare. Run the same crop through each country’s numbers before assuming one location is automatically better than another.

How is livestock profitability different from crop profitability?

Livestock ties up capital over a longer cycle, feed and veterinary costs are ongoing rather than seasonal, and mortality risk is a real cost that crop farming doesn’t have in the same way. The calculator accounts for these differences rather than applying a crop-style single-season model.
