An online seller in Addis Ababa wants to accept telebirr, since it has more than 40 million users, plus CBE Birr for customers banking with Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, plus HelloCash for reach into areas the big players don’t cover as well. She can build three separate integrations herself, or sign up with one aggregator like Chapa and get all three, plus cards, through a single dashboard. Nobody had put a number on what that convenience actually costs her until she ran it herself.
That’s the real decision behind “which Ethiopian payment method should I use,” and it isn’t really about picking one winner. It’s about weighing direct integration, cheaper per transaction but three separate systems to build and reconcile, against an aggregator, one integration and one settlement schedule at a documented premium.

Why doesn’t this tool show a confirmed telebirr merchant rate?
Because telebirr, along with CBE Birr and HelloCash, doesn’t publish one. Merchant pricing for these three is negotiated directly with each provider’s business team and varies by volume and business type. The defaults in this calculator are planning estimates based on comparable East African mobile money merchant pricing, not confirmed rates, this is flagged directly in the tool.
Is Chapa’s fee actually published somewhere?
Chapa’s pricing sits in the 2 to 3% range commonly cited across the Ethiopian fintech and payments space, including by competitors positioning against it directly. It’s more publicly documented than any single wallet’s direct merchant rate, which is part of why an aggregator is often the easier starting point for a new online seller.
Should I just use Chapa and skip direct integration entirely?
For most new sellers, yes, at least at first. One integration covering telebirr, CBE Birr, cards, and more gets you selling faster than building and maintaining three separate systems. Direct integration tends to make sense once your volume is large enough that the fee difference outweighs the development and reconciliation overhead of running multiple systems yourself.
Does accepting more payment methods actually increase sales?
Ethiopian e-commerce data consistently shows mobile money accounts for the majority of digital payments, with bank cards and cash on delivery filling the rest. Leaving out a widely used rail, telebirr especially, given its user base, means turning away customers who simply don’t have another way to pay you.
Can international customers pay through any of these rails?
Not directly. telebirr, CBE Birr, and HelloCash are domestic Ethiopian rails. For diaspora or international customers, Chapa and similar aggregators typically bridge in card acceptance (Visa, Mastercard) and sometimes PayPal alongside the local wallets, worth checking specifically if cross-border sales matter to your business.
