Barbados Import Duty Calculator: Customs Duty, Levy & VAT (2026)

Order stock for a shop on Broad Street, or bring in samples through Grantley Adams International, and Barbados adds three separate charges on top of your supplier’s price before the goods reach you. Customs duty is the obvious one — but a general Environmental Levy and 17.5% VAT both stack on afterward. The Barbados import duty calculator on this page adds up all three at once, using the same CIF method the Barbados Revenue Authority applies at the port or airport.

How the Barbados Import Duty Calculator Works

The calculator follows Barbados’s standard CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) method:

  • CIF value = Goods value + Freight + Insurance
  • Import duty = CIF × your CARICOM CET rate
  • Environmental Levy = CIF × 1%
  • VAT = (CIF + Duty) × 17.5%
  • Total landed cost = CIF + Duty + Environmental Levy + VAT + any clearing fee

Enter your goods value, freight, and insurance, pick your duty band, and everything shows separately in USD and BBD, using a live exchange rate.

Barbados’s CARICOM Common External Tariff (CET) Rates

As a CARICOM member, Barbados applies the Common External Tariff to goods entering from outside the trade bloc. Most goods fall into one of these bands:

  • 0% — Exempt categories
  • 5%, 10%, and 15% — Intermediate and semi-finished goods
  • 20% — Most finished consumer goods
  • 30% — Higher-tariff categories
  • 40% — Fruits, vegetables, and some agricultural products

Some specific categories run far higher than the standard bands — jewellery at 60%, watches at 50%, and t-shirts at a striking 115%. If your product falls into one of these narrower classifications, confirm the exact rate with the Barbados Revenue Authority before you order.

The 1% Environmental Levy (and What It Doesn’t Cover)

Barbados charges a general 1% Environmental Levy on the CIF value of most imports, which this calculator applies automatically. What it doesn’t handle: Barbados also has a set of flat, item-specific environmental charges outside this general rate — fixed fees on refrigerators, television sets, and both new and used motor vehicles, plus a separate 0.75% levy on goods packaged in materials other than plastic, glass, metal, or paperboard. These are narrow enough categories that we’ve left them out of the automatic calculation — check with the BRA if your shipment includes any of them.

VAT on Imports: 17.5%

VAT in Barbados is charged at a standard 17.5%, calculated on the CIF value plus duty, not on the goods value alone. A handful of categories are zero-rated, including basic food items and exports. Note that VAT on hotel accommodation runs at a separate 10% rate, but that’s not relevant to general merchandise imports.

What This Calculator Doesn’t Cover: Vehicles & Excise Goods

This tool is built for general merchandise, not motor vehicles. Vehicles face a steep combination in Barbados: 45% import duty, a flat environmental levy per vehicle, and Excise Tax on top; one of the more complex vehicle-import regimes in CARICOM. Excise Tax, ranging from 5% to 60%, also applies separately to alcohol, tobacco, and petroleum products, plus a 10% excise on sweetened beverages. None of these are covered here — see the Barbados Revenue Authority’s own calculators for those categories.

Worked Example: Importing $2,000 of Goods into Barbados

Here’s what a straightforward shipment looks like in practice:

  • Goods value: $2,000
  • Freight: $300
  • CIF value: $2,300
  • Import duty (20%): $460
  • Environmental Levy (1%): $23
  • VAT (17.5% of CIF + duty): $483
  • Total landed cost: $3,266 (roughly Bds$6,532)

That’s about 63% above the goods value alone, customs duty is only the first of three charges stacking on top of your supplier’s price.

Key Takeaways

  • CARICOM CET duty on goods entering Barbados ranges from 0% to 40% for most items, though specific luxury categories run much higher, jewellery at 60%, t-shirts at 115%.
  • A general 1% Environmental Levy applies to most imports, calculated directly on CIF, separate, narrower flat-fee levies apply to items like refrigerators, TVs, and vehicles.
  • VAT is 17.5%, calculated on CIF plus duty. Barbados’s standard rate since VAT replaced 11 separate taxes in 1997.
  • Vehicles and Excise Tax goods (alcohol, tobacco, petroleum, sweetened beverages) use separate schedules, not this calculator.
  • The Barbados dollar is pegged at Bds$2.00 to US$1, a long-standing and stable rate.

How is import duty calculated in Barbados?

Duty is calculated on the CIF value of your shipment, goods value plus freight plus insurance, multiplied by the CARICOM Common External Tariff rate for that product’s HS code, ranging from 0% to 40% for most goods, with specific luxury categories running higher.

What is the Environmental Levy and how is it calculated?

Barbados charges a general 1% Environmental Levy on the CIF value of most imports. Separate, narrower flat-fee levies also apply to specific items like refrigerators, television sets, and vehicles, which aren’t included in this calculator.

Is VAT charged on top of duty in Barbados?

Yes. Barbados’s 17.5% VAT is calculated on the CIF value plus duty, not on the goods value alone.

What is the current USD to BBD exchange rate?

The Barbados dollar has been pegged at a fixed rate of Bds$2.00 to US$1 for decades. This calculator pulls a live rate on every visit, though the peg itself doesn’t move.

Does this calculator work for importing a vehicle into Barbados?

No. Vehicles face 45% import duty plus a separate flat environmental levy and Excise Tax, a distinct and more complex regime. Consult the Barbados Revenue Authority for vehicle-specific rates.
