Trinidad Import Duty Calculator 2026 (Free OPT & VAT Tool)

Order a phone case bulk-pack from a Guangzhou supplier and have it flown into Piarco, and Trinidad’s tax bill can genuinely surprise you. Between customs duty, a 7% Online Purchase Tax on air-freighted parcels, and 12.5% VAT charged on top of both, a courier shipment can carry a heavier tax load than almost anywhere else in the region. The Trinidad import duty calculator on this page breaks down exactly what you’ll owe before you place the order, using the same CIF method Customs & Excise applies at the airport or the port.

How the Trinidad Import Duty Calculator Works

The calculator follows Trinidad and Tobago’s standard CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) method, with one extra step most calculators miss:

  • CIF value = Goods value + Freight + Insurance
  • Import duty = CIF × your CARICOM CET rate
  • Online Purchase Tax (OPT) = CIF × 7% (only if it applies — see below)
  • VAT = (CIF + Duty + OPT) × 12.5%
  • Total landed cost = CIF + Duty + OPT + VAT + any clearing fee

Enter your goods value, freight, and insurance, pick your duty band, and tell the calculator whether OPT applies. It shows every line separately in USD and TTD, using a live exchange rate.

Trinidad’s CARICOM Common External Tariff (CET) Rates

As a CARICOM member, Trinidad and Tobago applies the Common External Tariff to goods entering from outside the trade bloc. Most goods fall into one of these bands:

  • 0% — Books, computer hardware and software, scanners, and other exempt categories
  • 5%, 10%, and 15% — Intermediate and semi-finished goods
  • 20% — Most finished consumer goods
  • 30% — Auto parts, DVD players, and jewellery
  • 40% — Agricultural products competing with local production

The Customs & Excise Division assigns the applicable rate by HS tariff heading. If your product doesn’t clearly fit one of these bands, confirm the exact classification using the Division’s own Duty Calculator before you order.

The 7% Online Purchase Tax (OPT): What It Actually Covers

This is the part most importers get wrong. The OPT is not a general online-shopping tax — it applies only when a shipment meets all of these conditions: purchased through an electronic transaction, imported by air, consigned to an individual consumer rather than a business, and cleared through a transit shed. Sea freight shipments don’t attract it. Neither do business-to-business imports. If you’re bringing in wholesale stock by container ship for resale, OPT typically doesn’t apply — but if you’re a small trader ordering samples by air courier for yourself, it almost certainly does.

The part that catches people out is the stacking: VAT isn’t calculated on the CIF value alone. It’s calculated on the CIF value plus duty plus OPT combined, so the 12.5% VAT effectively taxes the OPT itself. On a straightforward $3,000 courier order, that toggle alone can add roughly $268 to your landed cost — real money on a modest shipment.

Trinidad VAT on Imports: 12.5%

VAT in Trinidad and Tobago is charged at 12.5% on nearly all imports, calculated on the CIF value plus any duty and OPT already applied — not on the goods value alone. Some categories, including specific food items, are zero-rated. If your shipment doesn’t attract OPT, VAT is simply calculated on CIF plus duty, the same structure used across most of CARICOM.

What This Calculator Doesn’t Cover: Vehicles & Excise Goods

This tool is built for general merchandise, not motor vehicles. Vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, and fuel are taxed under Trinidad and Tobago’s Excise Tax framework, assessed separately from the customs duty, OPT, and VAT this calculator covers. For vehicles specifically, use the Customs & Excise Division’s own Duty Calculator and Duties & Payment guidance instead.

Worked Example: Importing $3,000 of Goods by Air Courier

Here’s what a $3,000 courier shipment looks like with OPT applied:

  • Goods value: $3,000
  • Freight: $400
  • CIF value: $3,400
  • Import duty (20%): $680
  • Online Purchase Tax (7%): $238
  • VAT (12.5% of CIF + duty + OPT): $539.75
  • Clearing fee: $100
  • Total landed cost: $4,957.75 (roughly TT$33,614)

Ship the same order by sea freight as a business import instead, and OPT drops out entirely: total landed cost falls to $4,690 — a difference of about $268 from that single toggle.

  • CARICOM CET duty on goods entering Trinidad ranges from 0% to 40%, with a 30% band for auto parts, DVD players, and jewellery.
  • The 7% Online Purchase Tax applies only to online purchases, imported by air, consigned to an individual — not to sea freight or business imports.
  • VAT is 12.5%, calculated on CIF plus duty plus OPT combined when OPT applies — a tax-on-tax structure unique to Trinidad among CARICOM’s larger economies.
  • Vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, and fuel use separate excise schedules, not this calculator.
  • The Trinidad and Tobago dollar trades near TT$6.78 to US$1, a long-standing managed rate.

How is import duty calculated in Trinidad and Tobago?

Duty is calculated on the CIF value of your shipment, goods value plus freight plus insurance, multiplied by the CARICOM Common External Tariff rate for that product’s HS code, ranging from 0% to 40% for most goods.

What is the Online Purchase Tax (OPT) and when does it apply?

OPT is a 7% charge on the CIF value of goods purchased online, imported by air, and consigned to an individual consumer rather than a business. It doesn’t apply to sea freight shipments or business-to-business imports.

Is VAT charged on top of duty and OPT?

Yes. Trinidad and Tobago’s 12.5% VAT is calculated on the CIF value plus duty plus OPT combined when OPT applies, meaning VAT is effectively charged on the OPT amount too.

What is the current USD to TTD exchange rate?

The Trinidad and Tobago dollar has traded in a narrow band near TT$6.71–6.85 per US dollar for the past year, under a long-standing managed exchange rate. This calculator pulls a live rate on every visit.

Does this calculator work for importing a vehicle into Trinidad?

No. Vehicles are taxed under a separate excise schedule. Use the Trinidad and Tobago Customs & Excise Division’s own Duty Calculator for vehicle imports.
