Zambia Business Tools & Calculators

A trader in Lusaka’s Soweto Market gets paid by mobile money, buys stock priced in Rand from a South African supplier, and is trying to work out whether she needs to register for VAT before the quarter closes. None of those numbers use the same math, and getting one wrong costs real money.

Most guides answer one of these questions. Running a business in Zambia touches mobile money fees, VAT compliance, freelancer tax, vehicle import duty, and regional trade costs all at once, often in the same month.

These are every Zambia business tool on MetricSuite, in one place: mobile money fees, VAT and Smart Invoice compliance, freelancer tax, vehicle import duty, and regional trade costs to South Africa and the DRC, organized by the decision each one supports.

VAT, Turnover Tax, mobile money levy and vehicle duty figures verified against the Zambia Revenue Authority and the National Assembly of Zambia, last checked September 2026. Rates and thresholds change. Confirm current figures with the relevant authority before making a business decision that depends on them.

FAQ

Do I need to register for VAT before I start trading in Zambia?

It depends on turnover. Registration becomes mandatory once your trailing 12-month turnover crosses K800,000, or K200,000 in any 3-month window. Check the VAT & Smart Invoice Calculator for your specific numbers.

Who actually pays Zambia’s mobile money levy, me or my customer?

The sender. If a client pays you via MTN MoMo or Airtel Money, you receive the full amount, the levy and network fee come out of their wallet, not yours. Cash withdrawals carry no government levy at all.

Am I taxed as a gig worker or as a standard freelancer in Zambia?

It depends on how your work is structured. Platform-based digital gig work falls under the 5% Turnover Tax. Consultancy and professional services are normally excluded and taxed under standard income tax instead. Confirm your classification with ZRA if you’re unsure.

Does trading with the DRC get the same treatment as trading with South Africa?

No. South Africa has given Zambia duty-free access under SADC since 2008. The DRC never joined SADC or COMESA, so AfCFTA is the only preferential mechanism available, and it’s still unevenly implemented at the Kasumbalesa border.
