Airtel Money Charges 2026: Uganda, Kenya & Ghana Calculator

Airtel Money charges depend on three things: the country, the type of transaction, and the amount. A UGX 200,000 withdrawal in Uganda carries a government excise duty on top of the operator fee. The same kind of transaction in Kenya or Ghana is priced and taxed differently.

This free calculator estimates the fee, the tax and the total deducted from your wallet for Uganda (Airtel Money), Kenya (Airtel Money) and Ghana (AT Money, formerly AirtelTigo Money). No sign-up, no email required.

Ghana

AT Money is the current Airtel-linked mobile-money brand. The E-Levy applied to electronic transfers, not cash withdrawals, and was repealed on 2 April 2025. The estimate reflects operator fees only and may differ from the live AT Money tariff.

Kenya

Airtel-to-Airtel transfers are free. Withdrawal fees vary by amount, from free for very small withdrawals to KES 300 at the upper published bands. Transfers to other networks have separate charges.

Airtel Money charges in Uganda, Kenya and Ghana explained

Each market stacks operator fees and taxes differently. This is what the calculator applies.

Uganda: banded fee plus 0.5% excise on withdrawals

  • The operator withdrawal fee rises in bands as the amount grows.
  • The government adds a 0.5% excise duty on the amount withdrawn, charged on top of the operator fee. It is calculated on the withdrawal value, not on the fee. (Daily Monitor, AllAfrica)
  • The 2018 amendment limited the duty to withdrawals, so sending money is not hit by it. (MFW4A)
  • Example: withdrawing UGX 200,000 adds UGX 1,000 in excise duty, plus the operator fee for that band.

Kenya: free on-net, banded off-net and withdrawals

  • Airtel to Airtel transfers are free. (Business Daily)
  • Withdrawals and transfers to other networks use banded fees that rise with the amount.
  • Kenya applies a 15% excise duty on transaction fees, and Airtel passed it through in revised tariffs. The calculator shows the published fee and adds no separate tax line. (Business Daily)

Ghana: operator fees only since the E-Levy repeal

  • Ghana repealed the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) with effect from 2 April 2025. (EY)
  • The calculator adds no E-Levy. It shows the AT Money operator fee only.

How to reduce your Airtel Money charges

  • Stay on-net where it is free. In Kenya, Airtel to Airtel transfers cost nothing.
  • Compare one large withdrawal with several small ones. In banded tariffs the fee per shilling usually falls as the amount rises. Run both scenarios in the calculator.
  • Pay from the wallet where merchants accept it. In Uganda the 0.5% excise duty applies to cash withdrawals, not to wallet payments.
  • Read the fee on the USSD or app prompt before entering your PIN. The confirmation screen shows the live charge.
