Uganda’s farmed fish sector got EU market access on 28 January 2026, ending a long-standing restriction that had confined most aquaculture exporters to regional and domestic buyers. Nile perch remains the country’s largest fish export earner, generating an estimated $100 to $150 million annually, roughly 70% of it bound for Europe. Neither market comes with a simple, published total cost, FOB price, processing, freight, and the Directorate of Fisheries Resources export levy all move independently, and exporters are often left doing the arithmetic shipment by shipment. This calculator adds them up.

Your EU-side importer handles the actual submission, but incomplete or inconsistent catch documentation on your end can delay or block clearance, worth confirming with your buyer before shipping, not something this calculator can price for you

What is the DFR export levy on fish exports from Uganda?

US$0.50 per kilogram on large fish species products exported fresh, smoked, or dried, payable at the time of export to the Directorate of Fisheries Resources. This is separate from the DFR export permit itself.

How much does a DFR fish export permit cost?

UGX 20,000 per year for application and renewal. This is a fixed annual licensing fee, unrelated to shipment volume or value.

Can Ugandan farmed fish be exported to the EU now?

Yes, as of 28 January 2026, when the EU granted market access to Uganda’s aquaculture sector. This was previously restricted; wild-caught Nile perch has a longer-established export history to the EU.

What is the EU CATCH certification system?

A digital system for submitting and verifying catch certificates, mandatory for EU importers since 10 January 2026, replacing the previous paper-based catch certificate process. It’s designed to prevent imports of illegally caught fish. Your EU importer handles submission on their end, but your catch documentation needs to be complete and consistent for it to go through.

Does this calculator include freight costs?

You enter your own freight and logistics cost per kilogram, since this varies significantly by shipping mode (air freight for chilled product, sea freight for frozen) and by route. There’s no single published rate to default to.
