What’s in the Calculation
Cherry Input Cost Based on the farmgate price and the cherry-to-green conversion ratio. Rwanda’s average conversion is around 16%, meaning roughly 6.25 kg of cherry produces 1 kg of green coffee. Premium micro-lots run closer to 10-15% conversion, since more cherry is rejected during sorting.
Processing / Wet Mill Cost Covers depulping, fermentation, washing, and drying at the coffee washing station (CWS), largely wages for station staff.
NAEB Export Fee NAEB charges 3% of total export value on every coffee shipment. This covers certificate of origin, certificate of quality, and technical support services.
Optional Input Levies If NAEB-distributed fertilizer or pesticide was used in production, NAEB charges RWF 97/kg and RWF 11/kg respectively, passed through in the calculator as optional checkboxes.
Freight & Logistics Rwanda has no coastline. Coffee travels roughly 1,500 km overland to Mombasa (Kenya) or Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) before it’s containerized for ocean freight, and multiple exporters report this overland leg costs more than the ocean freight onward to Europe or the US. There’s no single published rate for this, confirm your actual cost with your freight forwarder.
