A Cape Town solopreneur is choosing between five different payment gateways for her online store, quoting a US client in dollars while the Rand swings against her, and wondering whether the solar system she just put on her roof qualifies for a tax deduction. Each of those questions has a different, very specific answer.
Most guides answer one of these questions. Running a business in South Africa touches payment processing fees, currency risk on foreign invoices, regional export pricing, and tax incentives on capital purchases, often all in the same quarter.
These are every South Africa business tool on MetricSuite, in one place: payment gateway fees, forex-protected freelance retainers, SADC and AfCFTA export pricing, solar tax deductions, and vehicle import duty, organized by the decision each one supports.
Payment gateway, SADC/AfCFTA and Section 12B figures verified against each provider’s published tariff and SARS guidance, last checked September 2026. Rates and thresholds change. Confirm current figures with the relevant provider or SARS before making a business decision that depends on them.

FAQ
Can I actually use Stripe as a South African business?
Not directly. Stripe doesn’t offer South African merchant accounts or ZAR settlement to SA-registered businesses. PayFast, Yoco, and Peach Payments are the real local options.
Does AfCFTA give South Africa the same trade terms with every African country?
No. Zambia has traded duty-free with South Africa under the SADC Trade Protocol since 2000. Ghana and Kenya have no SADC or COMESA overlap with South Africa, so AfCFTA, active since January 2024, is the only preferential mechanism for those markets, and it doesn’t cover every product yet.
Is the 125% solar tax deduction still available in South Africa?
No. Section 12BA’s enhanced 125% deduction expired on 28 February 2025 and was not renewed. Systems installed in 2026 fall under Section 12B, a permanent 100% year-one deduction.
Does billing international clients in USD change my South African tax obligations?
No. Tax residency, not currency, determines what SARS expects. Worldwide income is declared regardless of the currency it was paid in, and most freelancers are provisional taxpayers.
